The meaning of the Japanese new era “Reiwa”


Prior to abdication of His Majesty the Emperor and accession to the Throne of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince, the Government of Japan decided the Cabinet order to amend the eraby the Cabinet Meeting on 1st of April 2019 and announced that the new Japanese era be called “Reiwa”. This new era will be used in Japan after 1st of May 2019 when His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince will accede to the Throne.

“Reiwa” is a word that consists of two letters of Chinese characters, but the first letter “Rei” means “beautiful” and the second one means “harmony” respectively. Moreover into the word “Reiwa” is put the meaning that culture will be nurtured as people bring their hearts together in a beautiful manner.

The new era is one on the authority of the national document for the first time in history and was quoted from the words of the Japan’s oldest poem book “Manyoshu” that was compiled in about 1,200 years ago.
