Leak of Tailings into River Voghji was Covered up

On October 17 the rescue service received a report that the water in the Voghji River in Syunik region was not clear, was white.

The fast response group of the regional crisis management center arrived on the site and found out that the tailings reservoir in Nerkin Giratagh had been damaged, and tailings leaked into the river.

During the meeting of government today the minister of emergency situations Felix Tsolakyan informed that the leak of the tailings into the Voghji River had been covered up. He said the rescuers noticed the leak in the morning and reported to him.

The minister said the owners repaired the leaking part on their own but the river was polluted, and the environmental damage has to be measured.

The minister of territorial administration Suren Papikyan informed that it is, most probably, the tails of Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine of Kajaran.

The minister of environment Erik Grigoryan said the inspectorate was there in the morning and took samples. The law enforcement agencies were there too. He also informed that the mentioned leakage was most probably in the upper section which is the tails of Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine of Kajaran. If the leak was from the lower section, it could be the tails of the former mine of Kavart in Kapan.

Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan said after the work of experts on the site they will discuss the issue of launching criminal proceedings.
